Battery-powered two and three-wheelers may even see some price corrections after the govt allowed electric vehicles to be registered without their batteries.
A letter sent to the transport department and transport commissioners of all states and Union Territories by the Centre on August 12 stated: “The government is striving to make an ecosystem to accelerate the uptake of electric mobility within the country. it’s time to return together to figure jointly to realize the broader national agenda to scale back vehicular pollution and oil import bill. it’ll also provide opportunities for the industry .”
The batteries in an electrical vehicle (EV) structure 30-40 per cent of the entire cost of the vehicle. the govt hopes that the upfront cost of the vehicle will thus be less than petrol, diesel or CNG powered two and three-wheelers.
“The battery might be provided separately by the first equipment manufacturer (OEM) or the energy service provider,” the letter added.
Naveen Munjal, director, Hero Electric said, “The policy may be a welcome move. I’m excited about the chances that exist in making EVs accessible to each individual within the country. All we’d like maybe a combination of such pioneering policies for it to figure within the future .”

The prototype of the EV and therefore the battery (regular or swappable) is required to be type approved by test agencies specified by the Central automobile Rules, 1989.

Amit Raj Singh, Co-founder & Director, GEMOPAI, said the Centre’s move will reduce the value of the acquisition of an EV for the customer, which is true now at par with combustion engines. He feels the main benefit is going to be to shared mobility and logistic players who are transitioning to EVs.
However, a senior executive of a number one electric two-wheeler manufacturer countered the move of the govt stating, “How does it remove the battery cost? EVs cannot run without batteries! they’re going to still need to be bought.”
